Solid steel hobs can be recoated cost-effectively. Special features include:

• Improved gear profile shape thanks to the high number of flutes
• Low load on cutting edge thanks to good chip distribution
• Reduction of setup times by using shank type or tandem hobs
• Smaller manufacturing tolerances for gears thanks to top hob quality

Powder-metallurgical substrates with the appropriate hard coatings are being increasingly used for dry hobbing as well.
